I flew back to Ft. Myers and we spent one more day at Ortona Locks getting ready to travel home. Hank had already put the boat in storage while I was home in Michigan. He so enjoys Ortona and watching the steady stream of different boats—all shapes and sizes—pass through the locks.
We left Ortona on April 7 and spent a night at a lovely KOA in Stark, Florida. Only problem was the trains blew their horns as they passed by all night long. Thursday we stopped in Augusta, Georgia. Hank had been there before and showed me the old section of town and the river walk—lots of brick everywhere. We ate dinner at a restaurant he remembered—T’s, a great place for catfish. It was the first day of the Masters and many of the golf fans were in the restaurant with us.
We spent two nights in Linwood, North Carolina so that we could have all day Saturday to visit the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer. Hank had been there before and I was so glad I finally got to see this special place. If you like trains, this is the spot. We rode a train out to their giant roundhouse and watched them move cars around on the working turntable. There are all kinds of engines and cars on display and we especially enjoyed seeing the displays of railcars—there were 2 private displays plus a postal and hospital train display. You can also watch the volunteers in the huge workshops restoring older cars and engines. Well worth seeing.
Last night out we camped at a campground set up at the site of an old lock on the Ohio River in Racine, Ohio. Was interesting to watch the tugs move the barges, mostly loaded with coal, up and down the river.
We arrived home on Monday, April 12, after nearly 5-1/2 months on the road. Parked in our spot behind the condos and now begins the monumental task of unloading, cleaning and resettling. Our friends, Art and Janie, refer to this process as “re-entry”. We’ve enjoyed our winter, but now look forward to being with family and friends at home again.
