Friday was a very busy day for all of us. Maddie spent the day with a friend and Kathleen and Tony were scheduled to have their new coach orientation and take possession of the new motorhome. I got to accompany Garrett and his first grade friends on a field trip to Riley’s Apple Orchard In Yucaipa. Been a long time since I’ve ridden on a school bus with 60 children! The Riley family introduces the children to all aspects of pioneer living with hands-on experiences.
After a fire was built, Garrett sawed additional logs to keep it going…
…Helped pound coffee beans, put a pot on the fire and even drank half a cup—which he loved…
…Got a clean shave and then was the barber for his buddy…
…Plowed a garden plot and got to plant and water a zucchini…
…And he helped assemble a real log cabin! Hank would have loved this.
Don’t know whether it was sexist on his part or not, but Garrett chose not to take part in sweeping out the cabin, doing the dishes or washing laundry and hanging it out to dry. His class then had a hay ride around the orchard and saw how apple cider is made.
We got to shop in the general store and then had a picnic lunch and play time before boarding the bus to return back to school. The day could not have been prettier and it was so special to share this with him.
He made good use of my iPhone on the return trip while I snapped several pictures out the bus window.
That night, Tony backed the new Allegro into their pole barn just like a pro and was relieved to see their was room to put the slides out, too.
